The flu and other viral illnesses with fever are currently circulating in very high number in Massachusetts in New Hampshire. Fever and viral symptoms like runny nose, congestion, headache, cough, fatigue, and muscle aches are common. Not all illnesses with fever need to be seen at the office, however.
If your child is over three months old, and is fully vaccinated, we recommend that you do fever control, hydration, and symptom management at home for several days before coming in for a visit.
Signs and symptoms that would be concerning and would definitely require a visit include: fever over 104°F, fever lasting for more than five days, inability to stay hydrated, very rapid or shallow breathing, difficulty breathing with acute chest pain, or specific issues including acute ear pain, or eye drainage.
Viral illnesses definitely can cause sore throat. If your child has a sore throat WITHOUT runny nose, congestion, or cough, we should do a visit for strep evaluation.
Doses of Tylenol or Motrin are calculated based on your child’s most recent weight. You can find this in a recent visit on my chart. Our website has easy access to medication dosing charts. It can be found here at CMO Medication Dosing
